Unless I missed something, roller skating movies always suck rubber. Rollerball, Roll Bounce, Xanadu - I’d rather face plant on a hard rink than re-watch any of ‘em.
Well, it seems America’s sweetheart, Drew Barrymore, might just change all that.
Whip It, the upcoming roller-derby comedy, seems like it has all the ingredients to finally break the rolo curse. Combining tough ass roller-derby chicks (with names like Smashley Simpson, Maggie Mayhem, and Babe Ruthless), a killer cast (Kristen Wiig, Ellen Page, and Juliette Lewis), and Drew’s first time behind the camera as director…I’m all revved up to see some hardcore hellions on wheels.
The film is based on the book “Roller Girl” by Shauna Cross, and will be released this Fall through Fox Searchlight. USA Today has the full story, and a sweet slideshow with hi-res snaps. Click on the above image for a LARGER version.

Cmon now not all rollerskate/blade movies suck. Dont you remember airborne, with the classic surfing and rollerblading cut scenes they were classic…lol
ok, so i wouldn’t call it a rollerskating flick per se, but ATL was a great coming-of-age story where 25% of the story took place in a rink.
this has the potential to be good… zoe bell FTW.
Never could figure out why anyone would watch anyone roller skate. Never could sit through any roller skate movie or roller blade action. However, I remember watching roller derby with my much older brother and just LOVING that shit. That kinda tv can bond two siblings like rubber cement. I don’t know what it is! Can’t stand WF wrestling, but something about girls slamming each other into walls and elbowing each other to the planks just makes me so happy. And the fact it could happen to Drew makes me even happier! yay!
Thanks to this blog, I know about Roller Girl. This will be great reading for my upcoming vacay.
