Yeah it’s bad. It’s only pleasures are visual and kitsch. Ridley Scott is a bad director who doesn’t care about story and this is a perfect example of the problem with most of his films. Oh and the original version with the Tangerine Dream score is way better because the music makes the movie more fun and less serious.

It is pretty unwatchable other than Curry. Mia Sara is still in her Ferris prime (smokin’ hot!), but other than being pretty to look at, this movie is crap!
If you loved it as a kid it has a nostalgic quality that doesn’t easily wash off. Baring that, you’re right.
I’d say Nate is spot on with this one. I loved this movie growing up and even though I can watch it now and see how terrible it is a part of me will always love it.
It rocked my world when I was a kid. I still think the effects, visuals, and makeup are super-cool. It did seem rushed. Maybe it needed more production time.
It’s all about nostalgia, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. When you’re a kid you like a lot of crappy movies, and those good memories stay with you as you grow, I guess. This coming from a guy whose favorite childhood movie is Space Jam.

I think you had to actually see this as a kid to appreciate it. I saw it in the theater (I’m assuming my parents had no clue what it was about) and loved the shit out of it. Still do.
Bryan Ferry (possibly oscar-nominated) song “Is Your Love Strong Enough” from the credits is still one of my top guilty pleasures of all time.
I had been raised part Catholic, part Presbyterian until this movie. Tim Curry’s performance and make-up were larger than life and make this movie worth watching. The set doesn’t matter, nor does the story, it was an 80′s movie. Few movies had a good story, led alone a good set to go with it. That’s why it’s a great children’s movie (besides making Satan look cool), let the child’s imagination fill in the gaps. It’s the same reason Masters of The Universe was good.
An unquestionably bad film. However, the production design, costumes, lighting, and Tim Curry’s makeup were staggeringly amazing.
And frankly, Curry’s performance (apart from the silly laughing) is pure Shakespearean genius.
