Whether you rent it…or go whole hog and buy it…you need to get your hands on the second season DVD of This American Life.  The Showtime series, and in particular, the sixth episode, “John Smith,” is perhaps the best audio/visual creation released during 2008.

If you’re not familiar with Ira Glass, he’s the radio genius and creative force behind, This American Life, the Peabody award-winning program produced by Chicago Public Radio.  Every week, Glass and his team focus on thematic stories regardng the human condition, stemming from the 50 states and beyond.

A few years ago, TAL made a strange and wonderful venture into the world of television.  And despite some trepidation from radio purists, it proved to be one of the rare projects that not only survived the medium transition, but thrived and blossomed in a whole new way.  More after the jump…
