KEYWORD: Film

This is pure awesomeness…or is it? I was a huge fan of Freddy Krueger in my youth and I can only hope that Michael Bay’s vision doesn’t F this one up. Bay’s remake plans include The Birds, The Tenant, Rosemary’s Baby…I might start crying if I continue.

I have faith in music video director Samuel Bayer, who’s done work for Green Day, Iron Maiden, Metallica, David Bowie, and many more. Jackie Earle Haley as Krueger is just great casting, but I don’t know how I feel about his look, or his voice. He sounds like The Waterboy meets Billy Bob’s character in Sling Blade.

Warner Bros. and New Line are currently planning to release A Nightmare on Elm Street April 16, 2010. For the Official Website click here.

Believe it or not, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is a fantastic film.

Funny, fresh, original, inventive, and smarter than your average Shrek, this family comedy works on many levels. If you’re a fan of Andy Samberg’s SNL Digital Shorts, then you’ll appreciate the obscure humor that they managed to inject into this animated gem.

Don’t believe me? Fine.

Just take a look at the embedded promotional clip above and I’m sure you’ll see, this is a clear departure from the formulaic studio CG fests. And after you see it, shoot me an email so I can say, “Told ya so, pardner.”

I’ve seen the trailer for this film multiple times and it’s already giving me nightmares.  The film is written and directed by newbie Oren Peli and is being distributed by Paramount.  Release date: September 25th 2009

The Wicked WitchA few weeks back, the uber-wonderful WNYC podcast, Studio 360, dedicated an entire hour to the cultural impact of all things Wizard of Oz.

The episode discusses the life and times of author L. Frank Baum, the 1939 film adaptation by Victor Fleming, Oz conventions, and of course, silver shoe populism and homosexual undertones.

Also featured: interviews with Salman Rushdie, Nora Ephron, Neil LaBute and a nod to the spin-offs The Wiz, Wicked, and Return to Oz. Check out the episode here.

Herzog, Slate MasterJimmy and I have an unshakable Werner Herzog fetish. Vice Magazine recently published an interview with the man responsible for Fitzcarraldo, Grizzly Man, and let’s not forget, Even Dwarfs Started Small.

In the piece, Werner discusses his admiration for NBA players, his belief in downsizing film crews (just look at that picture of him manning the Rescue Dawn slate all by himself!), and how Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans might be the most hilarious movie he’s ever made.

To read the article, go here…and if you want more Werner, he just published a book of Fitzcarraldo reflections entitled, Conquest of the Useless. Special thanks to my girl Nini for the hot tip on this.

Our good friends over at Slash Film reported this at the beginning of the month, but in case you missed it, The New York Times Magazine published a wonderful article about music video mastermind – diehard skateboarder – movie mold breaker Spike Jonze, and the trials and tribulations involved in bringing Where The Wild Things Are to the big screen.
