In the aforementioned issue of “Rolling Stone,” writer Gavin Edwards made a surprisingly accurate comparison between two of my favorite artists, Woody Allen and Prince.

In the introduction to his review of Prince’s new THREE-DISC album, “MPLSoUND” / “LOtUSFLOW3R” / “Elixir,” Gavin writes:

“Leaving aside the Super Bowl halftime show and the assless pants, Prince is like Woody Allen:  They’re both reclusive, sex-obsessed geniuses who release new material relentlessly without any regard to the law of diminishing returns.”

Spot on, mate…spot on.

In the latest issue of “Rolling Stone” (#1076), there’s a wonderful 14-page article about singer-songwriter-actor-outlaw Kris Kristofferson, written by none other than Ethan Hawke.

At first, I was skeptical of Ethan’s journalistic chops, having only read sub-lackluster reviews of his two novels, “The Hottest State” and “Ash Wednesday.”

However, the article was a pleasant surprise…proving to be a mix of historical reflection, cultural context, and measured idolatry that showcased Ethan’s clear passion for his subject.
